What are the main benefits of having a doula?
There is overwhelming evidence that having a doula will positively impact your pregnancy, birth, and postnatal experience.
Budget cuts, staff shortages and an increasing move towards a more medicalised approach to birth means higher induction rates, more unplanned caesareans and sadly, more birth trauma. The consequence of birthing in a system that is increasingly stretched and broken is that your voice, which should be heard above all else, is often ignored.
Privacy, safety, informed consent, and continuity of care are the foundations of birth, and your doula will help you achieve these.
They will remind you along the way that you hold all the power. They will protect that power, encourage it and fiercely advocate on your behalf if anyone tries to take it away.
What is doula matching?
Unfortunately, finding the right doula isn’t easy.
After all, you’re going to share an intimate experience with this person. They’ll be there to support you and your partner (if you have one) during one of the most profound - and potentially stressful - situations in your life.
It can quickly feel overwhelming once you start doing Google searches and trawling through old-fashioned directories. Like finding a needle in a haystack. Even if you find options that look suitable, how do you know if they’re available or experienced in supporting your unique circumstances?
That’s why we’ve created The Doula Club.
We offer you a bespoke, personalised service that takes all the work, stress, and hassle out of finding a doula.
Rather than spending hours narrowing down doulas based on a profile picture, limited information, and a hunch, we’ll match you with verified doulas based on your requirements, location and budget.
How do we match you with your doula?
We’ll schedule a call to explore your birth options, wishes, and plans.
We will ask specific, targeted questions that help us determine who will be the perfect doula match for you.
A few days later, The Doula Club will present you with a shortlist of three verified doulas to meet before you choose your ideal match.
Once you have selected, you move forward with your Doula and onto the all-important individualised birth planning process.
Why do women and their partners hire a doula?
People hire doulas for a variety of deeply personal reasons, reflecting their unique circumstances, experiences, and aspirations for childbirth.
Emotional and Advocacy Support: Many seek a doula for emotional support and advocacy, ensuring someone is consistently on their side to navigate medical systems and advocate for their wishes. This can be especially important for single parents, those without a strong support system, or whose partners don't feel comfortable advocating.
Experience and Guidance: A doula offers experienced guidance on labour techniques, pain management and biomechanics. They will support both you and your partner, enhancing the birth experience and managing expectations based on previous births for those with older children.
Navigational Help in a New System: Some women are unfamiliar with the UK healthcare system, and the NHS and doulas provide invaluable assistance in navigating unfamiliar medical practices and advocating within the system.
Preparation and Education: Parents, especially those having a baby for the first time, look to doulas for education, preparation, and demystification of the birthing process, helping to alleviate fears and build confidence.
Empowerment and Informed Choices: Individuals will seek a doula's expertise to make informed decisions and navigate medical protocols to achieve a birth experience that aligns with their preferences and values.
Trauma and Fear Management: For those with previous traumatic experiences or fears about childbirth, doulas offer a reassuring presence and continuous support, aiming for a positive and healing birth experience.
Continuity of Care: The lack of continuity with medical caregivers leads people to doulas for the consistent support a doula provides throughout pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.
Hiring a doula represents a desire for a supported, informed, and empowered birthing experience in which the mother's well-being and preferences are a priority.
